Third Ward Houston, also known as Greater Third Ward, is a historically Black neighborhood founded by Black formerly enslaved community leaders in 1872.
When most people think of Third Ward, they think of Texas Southern University (TSU), Emancipation Park and Beyonce.

Walk around Emancipation Park
Emancipation Park is the oldest public park in Texas. The park, like Third Ward, was established by Black formerly enslaved community leaders in 1872. This 10-acre park is also home to events such as the annual Juneteenth Celebration & the Creole Festival.

Visit Kindred Stories Bookstore
Kindred Stories is a bookstore that focuses on and amplifies Black authors & artists. Kindred Stories started out doing pop ups at Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market in Fourth Ward. They are now located in one of Project Row Houses’ buildings. You can shop in-person and online.
