Notes & tips for how to write a media pitch
- Getting press for your business, project, or brand usually isn’t make or break. It’s more of a nice to have.
- Build relationships with people over a period of time. Start with engaging with them on social media.
- Common mistakes when pitching:
- What’s your story? Tell people:
- who you are
- what you do
- why you started
- why your work matters / why people should care
- Pitch should include how it benefits the person receiving the pitch
- Be specific about what you want. For example, say
- “I’d love for you to consider me as a guest for your show”
- “I’m interested in sponsoring one of your blog posts”
- When pitching, send a personalized email
- Direct messages (DMs) may not be the best place for sending a pitch. Go to the person’s social media profile (or something else) and check to see if it says “NO DMs”
- Do your research and show that you’ve done your research.
- You don’t need press for the sake of press. Why are you seeking press? How will press benefit you and your business, project, or brand? How will you measure success?
- What’s your story? Tell people:
Example of a media pitch that isn’t good:

Love your blog and I’d love to be on it.Â
I also have a blog. On my blog I write about how passionate I am about cooking healthy food.Â
This is something that I want to share with your readers as well.Â
Looking forward to working with you.Â
Thanks,Â
– Mercedes
