Favorite Black Owned Restaurants in Houston (2020 Edition)

Last updated on February 23rd, 2023 at 01:07 am

I’ll spare you the sad long introduction about 2020. I know it was a crappy year and you know it too. You’re here for the food, so in no particular order, here are my favorite eats from Black owned restaurants in Houston, TX. And if you need more, check out 60+ Houston Black Owned Restaurants & Food Trucks.

Houston Sauce Co.

A food truck & shoppette serving the best vegan food in Houston! I normally catch their food truck in Third Ward, in the parking lot next to Crumbville, TX Bakery but they also park outside of the shoppette, where you can find their bottled sauces, snacks, merch, and more. I’ve had several of their menu items, like the Loaded Nachos and Boudain Sushi Roll, and I still haven’t decided on a favorite.

Glazed: The Doughnut Cafe

A 24-hour donut cafe in the Texas Medical Center area serving yeast, cake, and filled donuts as well as donut sandwiches. Take a look at what’s in the display case to help you place your order since there are 30+ donut options. I expect to visit this cafe at least once per month and I have my eye on the Chocolate Bacon and Blueberry Cake donuts for my next order.

Taste Bar & Kitchen

The best shrimp and grits I have had in my entire life came from Taste, a Midtown southern comfort food restaurant inside of what may have been a 2-story residential home. This place stays packed, and since I’m an introvert (and we’re still in a pandemic), I’ll stick to takeout!

The Breakfast Klub

If my stomach would allow me to have Texas toast every day, I would. And I’d get it from The Breakfast Klub. Self-described as a casual family style restaurant, they are located in Midtown and are best known for their Wings and Waffles & Katfish and Grits.

Earthy Goodness Vegan Ice Cream

Rounding out this list is Uncle Otis’ vegan ice cream trailer, which is usually located in Third Ward or at various vegan food festivals around Houston. I’ve eaten a lot of ice cream throughout my life (who hasn’t?) and this is my absolute favorite! The coconut-based ice cream has a super smooth & creamy texture, which cannot be said for many vegan ice cream brands from the grocery store. Other vegan treats such as bundt cakes, pies, and ice cream cake are also available.

Even I found this list to be pretty short, so this year, expect to see more blog posts and social media posts about the food I’m enjoying at Black owned restaurants in Houston, TX.
