Fresh & Affordable Food Comes to Chicago’s West Side

Forty Acres Fresh Market is a Black woman owned full service grocery store in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, IL.

Owner & operator Elizabeth (Liz) Abunaw opened the brick and mortar location in September 2025 after beginning a series of pop up produce markets in 2018.

I was in town for the National Restaurant Association Show and UTILITY 2026 but made time in my schedule to stop by Forty Acres Fresh Market.

For now, this post is mostly a gallery of photos of the store, including the fresh produce, the grab and go menu, pantry staples and more.

Forty Acres Fresh Market Menu: Mabel’s Meals

From the Mabel’s Meals Fresh Menu, you can order breakfast sandwiches from 8 to 10 am, rice bowls, and extras like:

  • corn bread muffins (jalapeno cheddar or honey butter)
  • macaroni and cheese
  • mashed potatoes
  • collard greens
  • roasted vegetables

Some of the extras come in two sizes: 8 oz and 16 oz.

The mac and cheese with smoked gouda is one of the best purchases I’ve made on my Chicago trip.

Spotlight on Black owned products

A sign at the entrance of the store reminds us that by shopping here, we are making intentional purchases and we can continue doing so by looking for the following labels:
