Akwaaba Mansion in Brooklyn Makes It Easy to Skip Manhattan Hotels

Last updated on January 24th, 2026 at 08:05 pm

The worst part about planning a trip is spending hours reading reviews trying to book a hotel. I no longer have this problem with my New York City trips because I will be staying at Akwaaba Mansion in Brooklyn from now on.

Two photos of Monique Greenwood's bed and breakfast. The photo on the left is of the living room with a sofa, chair, end table and chandelier. The photo on the right is a plate of waffles topped with fresh berries, three sausage links, scrambled eggs with a red mug of tea.

Akwaaba Mansion is a Black owned bed and breakfast that celebrated 30 years of business in 2025.

My stay was in Fall 2025 while attending Food Funded 2025.

Why not stay in Manhattan? Akwaaba Mansion Location

The main reason I visit New York City is because there are so many things to do and see. When I’m done with cafe hopping or meeting food founders at events, I want a reprieve away from all the action.

Quiet is not a word I’d use to describe the NYC-area but I’m able to sleep through the night when I’m in Brooklyn.

Located at 347 MacDonough St in Bed-Stuy, Akwaaba Mansion is surrounded by mature trees and brownstones with varying degrees of decorated stoops.

It’s steps away from the newly-opened Black owned bookstore BEM | books & more (pictured below) and a 7 minute walk from the Utica Avenue stop on the A and C subway lines.

Which room to book at Akwaaba Mansion in Brooklyn

There are four types of guest rooms at this bed and breakfast: Ashante, Jumping the Broom, Black Memorabilia and Regal Retreat.

The Regal Retreat is the only guest room that has a queen size bed instead of a king size. However, all the rooms seem like they would be good for couples.

I chose the Regal Retreat for the large glass shower and because I need inspiration for a wood headboard I plan to buy this year.

The guest room is at least double the size of what I’m used to when staying in New York City hotels.

The bed is in the center of the room, framed by a tall wooden Victorian headboard and surrounded by three large windows.

There’s a closet, a bedside dresser and a tall boy for storage.

To the left of the decorative fireplace is the writing desk and the bathroom is in the right corner of the room.

Akwaaba Mansion’s amenities

Between my guest room and the front porch, I’m having a hard time picking a favorite.

And I might have spent more time on the porch than in my guest room.

Despite the large number of trees in this neighborhood, this part of Akwaaba Mansion has no shortage of natural sunlight.

Multiple seating areas decorate this wrap around porch that has views of both the front yard and backyard.

Prices & how to book your stay

I booked the Regal Retreat guest room for $255 per night before taxes.
