San Francisco? Nah, Try These Oakland Black Owned Restaurants
I hear a lot about the San Francisco food scene, but I’m here to make sure that Black owned restaurants in Oakland get their shine.
When most people are reminded of the Bay Area, they think about San Francisco and its [overhyped] tech scene.
But my first thought is of Oakland – the city’s vibrant communities and incredible food.
Especially the Black owned restaurants.
When you plan your California trip, make sure Oakland makes the cut.
And here’s a list of Black owned restaurants & food spots to hopefully persuade you to put Oakland at the top of your Bay Area travel itinerary.
Don’t Leave the Bay Area Without Trying these Black Owned Restaurants in Oakland
1. alaMar Kitchen & Bar
Dominican cuisine with a specialty in seafood.

2. The Cook and Her Farmer
Downtown Oakland wine and oyster bar located inside Swan’s Market.

3. Raised Roots
Bay Area farm known for their extra virgin olive oil and probiotic hot sauce in addition to their fresh produce.
The farm is not open to the public, but Raised Roots is a vendor at the Grand Lakes Farmer’s Market on Saturdays (746 Grand Ave, Oakland, CA 94610).
4. Mandela Grocery Cooperative
Black employee-owned grocery store that offers delivery. A lot of their produce and products are organic and from local farmers and food producers, including Black farmers and Black entrepreneurs.

5. kubé Ice Cream (vegan)
Vegan ice cream that uses full-fat coconut cream. This is not only a Black-woman owned ice cream company, but also an ice cream manufacturer.
The facility is not open to the public but you can buy kubé from:

6. Rize Up Bakery
Wholesale sourdough bakery.
Their bakery is not open to the public but you can find their baked goods at several locations, including the Grand Lakes Farmer’s Market on Saturdays (746 Grand Ave, Oakland, CA 94610)
7. Cupcakin’ Bake Shop
Gourmet cupcake & specialty cake shop located inside Swan’s Market. Delivery is available through Door Dash. There are multiple locations, including Berkeley (Telegraph Ave & Shattuck Ave) and Walnut Creek.

8. Coco Noir Wine Shop
Find (and buy!) the best Oakland wine in this downtown shop that offers wine tastings, tapas and special events. Located in the Black Art’s Business Movement District, Coco Noir’s mission is to sell wine produced by women and people of color. Mobile wine bar services are available for corporate clients.
